Floyd County Preservation Group Announces Second Meeting
A second meeting of an ad hoc group wishing to form a new countywide preservation organization in Floyd County will take place on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 7:00 pm at the Cardinal Ritter House, 1218 E. Oak Street, in New Albany. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss a formal name for the new non-profit organization and to review draft vision and mission statements for the organization. Volunteers will also be solicited from each of Floyd County’s five townships to survey the current state of historic properties in each township in order to formulate a list of threatened historic resources for the purpose of developing a work plan for the group. Other educational and advocacy opportunities will also be discussed.
The meeting is open to all who have an interest in historic preservation in Floyd County. For more information, contact the Southern Regional Office of Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana at 812/284-4534.

It's great that the preservation group is able to meet at the Ritter House...it's unfortunate other groups are told "no".
Can you expand upon that remark, Bayern?
Who has been turned away, and why?
I requested use of the Ritter House for the grocery co-op steering committee meeting and was told that the Ritter House is not ready to accept group meetings such as ours because they haven't formed a committee to examine requests for usage. I was also told that the committee needs to decide on compensation for use of any rooms and other issues.
As for other groups, I've only heard second-hand from a couple of people who said that they, too, were turned down. Bluegill may know more about that than I do.
Wow, how very strange, given that we've been told that the Ritter House is designed to function as a comomunity center of sorts. I guess my plans for an Atheist Marxists for Community Development study group there are on hold, which is too bad, because membership's rising in bad economic times.
We're just fortunate that we have places like the Carnegie Center that bent over backwards to help us have our first two meetings and Dueling Grounds Cafe (shameless plug) that let me schedule a time to use their space on the fly. Without compensation, I might add...
Unfortunately I could not attend last night. I hear they had a heck of a turnout.
