GREEN MOUSE presents NAWBANY WEEK IN REVIEW for 24 January 2020.

As the topic of New Agony City Hall's first web site post in over a month, Team Gahan chose to exalt pure politics to the exclusion of numerous topics of relevance on the part of the majority of the populace, those not occupying seats on the Floyd County Democratic Party's fix-stays-in central committee.

City of New Albany Appeals to Indiana Supreme Court to Resolve Former Floyd County Commissioners’ Breach of Longstanding Property Agreement

Jeff Gahan's epitaph? It will be "He Kept Us Apart" -- from half our government, and I'm not talking about Republicans ... although Gahan is.

Speaking of the GOP, we have a winner in the contest to replace Billy Stewart as county commissioner.

The Floyd County Republican Party has selected the newest member of the Floyd County Commissioners. On Thursday, a caucus was held at the Calumet Club in New Albany to hear from potential appointees. Out of the six who tossed their hats into the ring for the District 3 seat, the caucus ultimately landed on Tim Kamer. Kamer will take the place of Billy Stewart, who resigned from his post as president of the commissioners in December to expand his role at Hofmann USA.

Meanwhile the NewsBune awakened Chris Morris to perform a professional eulogy for Susan Orth, who is retiring as a judge. Predictably, Morris sought the viewpoint of Democratic party chairman Adam Dickey, who is at least as familiar with the concept of "jurisprudence" as Mitch McConnell.

Is this vacancy the one Matt Lorch has endured abuse from his own political party for the past five years in order to be anointed for? Only the shadow knows, but so far, Shane isn't talking.

There were all kinds of local sporting events this week. Those don't matter at all, so we'll ignore them. Of greater relevance is the Board of Works picking favorites when it comes to downtown street closures.

ASK THE BORED: Is consistency among BOW's mandates when it debates street closings?

On Monday there was a merchant meeting.

The meeting lasted an hour, during which there was no mention whatever of the impending (2021) Sherman Minton Bridge repair-mandated adjustments -- lane and ramp closures and the like -- that stand to have a disruptive impact on downtown specifically, and in more general terms the city as a whole. Does Team Gahan have the latest in a long series of top secret plans reserved for the 11th Hour? If not, or even if so, shouldn't this coping strategy be something we're openly planning for? Or is participatory "infrastructure" of this sort simply not a priority in Nawbany, lest real people become involved?

We've said it before, so to repeat: The only bridge repair disruption "plan" Team Gahan possesses at present involves amassing propaganda in order to blame Republicans for it.

Finally, a tip of the hat to restaurateur Ian Hall. Until you've poured yourself into birthing an independent local business, done all you can to nurture it, then be compelled to face reality and euthanize your own creation, you simply cannot grasp how hard it was for Ian to make this video. There is much to be learned from any such decision. That doesn't mean it's easy

VIDEO: Longboard's Taco & Tiki has closed, but Ian Hall has good news, too.

Ian Hall made the announcement via video this morning on Facebook. Trust me, I know what it feels like to lose one, so best wishes to Ian, Nikki and the Brand Hospitality restaurant group. Overall Brand's brand remains strong at The Exchange Pub + Kitchen and Brooklyn and The Butcher.

There is no word yet as to the next configuration of the soon-to-be vacant space on the corner of Market and Pearl.

You'll notice that in the video Ian is seated in the space many readers will recall as Feast BBQ's original location in New Albany, adjacent to The Exchange on Main Street. The building changed hands after Feast BBQ closed in 2018, and now the top-to-bottom remodeling is complete.

It will be known as the Tavern Hall at The Exchange and function as a dining room and special events space. Kitchen space at The Exchange also has been expanded.

LIVE TO EAT: Longboard's Taco & Tiki will open this Friday, July 27.

From the folks who brought you Exchange and Brookyn, Longboard’s Taco & Tiki is coming to downtown New Albany in 2018.

Let's start a list.

OPENING IN 2020
Board and You Bistro & Wine Bar (TBD; 430 Pearl, where the Cidery was to have been)
Monnik Beer Company (TBD; former Bank Street Brewhouse on Bank)
Recbar 812 (February 3; former La Rosita's on Pearl)
Tavern Hall at The Exchange (event space in the former Feast BBQ)

Here is last year's summary.

New Albany's restaurant and bar openings and closings for 2019.

December 30, 2019

Following is our crowd-sourced list of restaurant/bar openings and closings in New Albany for 2019: Indies only; no chains, and just businesses within city limits.

Here's a special category: Floyd County Brewing, which expanded into the Biergarten after launching Grain Haus in 2018. They're still all common ownership, but deserving of note for organization of available space.

Did we miss anyone? There are two reasons why Our Lady of Perpetual Hops isn't on this list: (1) it doesn't have a kitchen, and (b) I'm still not sure whether it's city, fringe area or county. The beers are good, though.

OPENING IN 2019 ... 8 + 3 (see below) = 11
Boomtown Kitchen
Chicago City Pizza
Fistful of Tacos
Get It on a Bun at Booty’s
La Catrina
Tacolicious To Go
The Earl
The Standard Plate & Pour

CLOSING IN 2019 ... 6 + 3 (see below) = 9
Bank Street Brewhouse/Taco Steve
Cox’s Hot Chicken
Hull & High Water
Mandarin Cafe
Red Men Club
Sinaloa

BOTH OPENING AND CLOSING IN 2019 ... 3

LIVE TO EAT: Downtown food and drink update: La Tiendita, Cafe 157, Gospel Bird, Double Barrel and Longboard's.

The following survey of downtown New Albany food and drink is not intended to be comprehensive, but merely an overview of past days' browsing.

La Tiendita (111 W. Market) recently expanded its menu. What I've tasted so far has been wonderful, and they're as grassroots/family/indie as it gets.

New hours have been announced at Cafe 157 (157 E. Main Street).

Eric Morris from Gospel Bird has news, and in response, my waistline preemptively expanded.

ANNOUNCEMENT EVERYONE:

For the past nearly 3 years we've made a lot of changes to different styles of cuisine and tried to push the boundaries of what good southern-influenced food can be.

We've listened to your feedback and we'd like to get Gospel Bird back to its southern roots. Next week we will start developing a menu that represents our goals in the beginning:

No frills southern comfort food cooked with love. Fried chicken, country ham, BBQ of all sorts, fried green tomatoes, grits, gravy, etc. with a smiling and comforting service staff!

All the wonderful things we brought you in the beginning will be coming back at prices that are honest and fair. Thank you for all for your continued support and we are truly blessed and thankful to be in such a great community.

Peace, love, and bacon grease- Eric and the gospel bird team.

Double Barrel Bourbon Bar (147 E. Main) will be down by the riverside during Harvest Homecoming.

Longboard's Taco & Tiki closes this update with new lunch hours ...

... and a brilliantly subtle sidestep.

Taco, Tiki and the Top Ten posts at NA Confidential for July 2018.

Longboard's Taco & Tiki grabbed July's top spot.

If you're on Twitter and aren't following Hon. Deaf Gahan, go there immediately and enjoy the shadow mayoral account.

Thanks for reading NA Confidential, where we enjoy reconnoitering the neglected periphery for uniquely local perspectives on life in New Albany.

City Hall's allegations to the contrary, it can be grasped quite clearly that hundreds of you are reading, and we believe this fact attests to a keen ongoing interest in grassroots New Albany stories, perhaps because they're being chronically under-served elsewhere. After all, fawning stenography and inexorably multiplying religion columnists can get a newspaper only so far.

The July list begins with five "honorable mention" posts, before concluding with the Top Ten, escalating to No. 1. These statistics are derived from Google's internal accounting.

JULY HONORABLE MENTION (5)

Illicit Summit Springs Phase Two work, redux: Can't Team Gahan's lickspittles get their damn stories straight?

Wait, is Scott Wood somehow getting his groove back?

He'd best be careful, because to contradict Mike Hall -- the city's chief propagandist and royal court food taster -- might well to bring the wrath of Dear Leader down upon him.

That ugly word again: Plan Commission to consider "luxury" car sales at HyperCars on 13th and Spring.

Now the owner of HyperCars, a newly minted auto detailing shop in the former ServPro building on the southwest corner of Spring and 13th, wants to sell "luxury" used cars.

This recurring word, "luxury." But like Mayor Fouts up in Warren said, "it's still a used car lot."

I looked all over New Albany's zoning code and found no reference to "luxury" anything. The C-1b zoning classification refers to a "local" business, and it references the stipulations of C-1a, which seems to be describing small neighborhood retail shops, not car sales, hence the special exception being sought.

In 2017, days after Denton Floyd closed on the Reisz building using taxpayer money, these four high rollers involved with the project all donated to Jeff Gahan's re-election campaign.

$8,500 in one day's not a bad cut, eh? In 2017,the mayor sucked in just shy of $60,000 that we know about -- and it wasn't an election year. If you want to know what the Reisz building is about, follow the money -- and keep track of the transactions.

439

Reisz Elephant people power tonight? If we're to spend $10,000,000 on anything, it should be for as many people as possible, not one single government building.

June of 2018 will be remembered as the month when Emperor Gahan's personality cult paraded past and the voice of a child rang out:

"But he isn't wearing anything at all!"

In future years, we'll look back and see an uninterrupted arc of hypocrisy, beginning with Gahan's hostile takeover of the New Albany Housing Authority in early 2017 alongside promises of rampant demolitions to come, and now culminating with tonight's fix-is-in $10,000,000 to construct his own luxury office suite.

440

GREEN MOUSE SAYS: Whither Mr. White? I'd like to be an ant at THAT picnic.

There has been no formal announcement of David White's political plans, but a second primary challenge to Gahan seems likely. There'll be plenty of time to consider the implications, so we can leave it there for now. Suffice to say that things may be getting interesting. All together now:

ON THE AVENUES: For Deaf Gahan and the Reisz Five, their luxury city hall will prove to be a Pyrrhic victory.

The broad outlines of an anti-anchor electoral coalition in 2019 increasingly are becoming visible. With each of Gahan’s grandiose and self-referential expenditures, the disgruntlement spreads.

The city’s lofty elites are over-confident, and the governing clique suffers from profound “institutional inbreeding.” The louder Gahan’s boasting becomes, and the greater his posturing, the more threadbare his personality cult’s clothing.

It’s true that Pinocchio Jeff will have pots of money in 2019, but the successful mobilization of Reisz refuseniks convinces me that we’re putting together a solid network for communication and cooperation.

This letter is so poorly written that maybe Duggins actually dictated it.

Seems he would have known about "old and antiquated systems" all the way back in 2017.

If he did know, why wait for these systems to collapse before doing something?

If he didn't know, then isn't $125k per year a bit much to pay in salary to someone to be reactive rather than proactive for the sake of political propaganda when the well-being of residents (not residences) is at stake?

Duggins, Gahan log into Priceline Dot Com as Riverview Towers residents are evacuated.

It's nice to see City Hall's efforts to address the ever-widening Compassion Gap by sending the Rev. Toran to deal with the media instead of Gauleiter Duggins, who has been too busy blaming Bob Lane for Duggins' own multiplicity of shortcomings to notice that living, breathing humans are in need of attention.

It's a kinder, gentler public housing putsch, wouldn't you say?

BEER WITH A SOCIALIST: The forthcoming beer list at Pints&union (bottle and can edition).

Old-timers will notice the presence of "comfort beers," "neglected classics" and "greatest beer hits" alongside beers like Stroh's, Old Style and Little Kings. The juxtaposition is purely intentional.

Indeed, it's a more egalitarian list than I would have written at the peak of polemical fervor, with fewer local craft brews; as noted previously, in my view the revolution has succeeded in large measure, and there are numerous American craft beers being vended in downtown New Albany.

---

501

Duggins spreads blame, manure as the air conditioning at Riverview Towers fails on HIS watch.

Can anyone remember a single instance of a Team Gahan operative admitting to error? Cults of personality are like that, you know.

ON THE AVENUES: Thanks to Joe Phillips, there'll be pints, union and good times downtown.

I’d like you to meet Joe Phillips.

Joe and I have spent considerably more than a year discussing the concept henceforth to be known as Pints&union. While I contributed to the theoretical vision and will be representing the pub’s beer on a daily basis, it needs to be understood that Joe’s the main man behind Pints&union.

I’m the rhythm guitarist, a supporting actor, or maybe just a guy who fervently wishes his friend and former employee to succeed in this entrepreneurial venture, and will do whatever is necessary to contribute to this end. I'm heavy into Pints&union -- I'm just not the big guy. That's more than fine with me.

Plan Commission to consider phase two of the Summit Springs Kelley Enrichment cluster muck development atrocity.

Do you really think anyone would bear the brunt of the cost to develop in the wrong place if not eased by public subsidies? Equally obvious is the connection between those public subsidies, the mayor, and a firm like Jacobi, Toombs & Lanz.

---

600

Did the developer of Phase 2 at the Summit Springs Luxury Mudslide Strip Mine Fun Park violate a cease and desist order yesterday?

At a time when public housing residents face daily insults from their colonial overlords as a prelude to demolition, Team Gahan brags about million-dollar condos in the middle of a strip mine.

Amid the blather and propaganda, we can be sure of one truthful eventuality: the volume of stormwater runoff coming from Summit Springs will be matched only by the amount of kickbacks flowing into the mayor's campaign piggy bank.

---

646

Let's talk about the 8% and their affordable slots in the 14-story luxury middle finger high atop Summit Springs.

Have there been public incentives and subsidies involved?

Look at it this way: the city

is paying for the road, and short of a privately financed gondola, there can be no hilltop strip mine development without a road past the white elephants (I mean, bison) to the, er, summit.

Want to bet the city's own 8 percent rule won't apply to living spaces within the Gahan Memorial Tumescence Tower?

LIVE TO EAT: Longboard's Taco & Tiki will open this Friday, July 27.

Let the record show two verified food and drink establishments debuting in downtown New Albany on Friday, July 27: Longboard's Taco & Tiki and the Double Barrel bar.

There may even be a third; more on that some other time.

At Longboard's, the Halls are cross-culturally adapting tiki to tacos, and throwing into the mix a Mexican-style lager beer brewed in Indianapolis -- and I like it. Such creative fusion makes perfect sense to me.

Tiki never was some sort of rigorous local tradition. It was a ingenious hybrid from the very start. Ironically, what's often forgotten is the founding connections between tiki and Chinese food, something that probably could have happened only in 1930s California during the pinnacle of Hollywood chic.

Tiki was, and still can be, so much more than kitsch. First, the food: a lot of Americans, certainly among the food nerd set, can now differentiate between Thai and Malaysian food, or Mandarin and Hunan dishes. But in the '30s, Don the Beachcomber was opening up a whole new culinary world when it served short ribs, pot stickers, and egg foo young to its guests. (Sunny) Sund had to import ingredients like oyster sauce directly from China, and she called her menu Cantonese, which, though we might scoff at the dishes now, was very sophisticated for the time.

The only reason I know any of this is the book I read last year in preparation to wrote about Chinese cuisine at Food & Dining MagazineBOOK REVIEW: Chop Suey – or how Chinese food came to be taken for granted in America.

As a side note, the book's author Andrew Coe explains the interesting history of beggar's hash (chop suey) in this story at Food Republic. I'll resist drawing the obvious parallels between cultural fusion and a welcoming immigration policy. Take it away, Ms. Grady -- and best wishes to Ian and Nikki.

Owners of The Exchange do it again with Longboard's, by Danielle Grady (Tom May Country Diner)

NEW ALBANY — For the past 12 months, Ian and Nikki Hall have kept pretty quiet about their new restaurant — barely posting on social media. But behind the wooden doors of 302 Pearl St., they’ve been busy. Really busy.

The two restaurateurs, owners of The Exchange Pub + Kitchen and Brooklyn and the Butcher, have labored over every detail of Longboard’s Taco & Tiki, which opens to the public at 5 p.m. Friday.

Even when describing the restaurant’s concept, Ian Hall delves deep into the coastal origins of the Tiki bar — talking about its surprising start in California, not Polynesia, and describing the creator — an entrepreneurial New Orleans-native who drew inspiration from his trips to the South Pacific.

Take the level of research that Ian put into understanding the history of tiki and multiply it by a thousand to get Longboard’s food and drink menu ...

LIVE TO EAT: The stunning new Dragon King's Daughter -- and three food & drink establishments debuting in the coming days.

Kevin gets it right at Insider Louisville (link below). The new location of Dragon King's Daughter at 129 W. Market is one for the ages. It's open now, and rolling. Sitting at the robata grill, you'll think you're in Chicago.

We also know that Pints&union will debut later this week (114 E. Market; date and time TBA).

In addition, the folks at Double Barrel (147 E. Main) have announced the bar's grand opening for this Friday, July 27 at 3:00 p.m.

Finally, Longboard's Taco & Tiki (302 Pearl Street) should be starting at any minute. Watch the Longboard's video here, and remember that these four new establishments are within three blocks each other ...

... and on evenings and weekends, parking is free on ALL levels of the State Street Parking Garage. The upper two levels are free every day.

Dragon King’s Daughter reopens with a new direction in expanded New Albany space, by Kevin Gibson (Insider Louisville)

I’ll always have a soft spot for Dragon King’s Daughter, the offspring of a long, lost favorite, Maido Essential Japanese.

When former Maido owner Toki Masubuchi opened the original Dragon King’s Daughter, or “DKD,” she took with her a few of the favorite maki rolls and happy hour specials. She would then open a DKD in New Albany with a slightly different menu, and it did as well as the Highlands location.

Now, Dragon King’s Daughter in New Albany has taken a step up, reopening a few blocks away in a larger space and adding a few extra touches. Based on a visit there, it was a fine step up ...

Downtown NA restaurant and bar scorecard: one new location, two openings and four coming soon.

Today an orange ATC sign appeared on the front door of the former Comfy Cow (109 E. Market), meaning soon the building will enjoy a different life as a bar (I'm pulling for designer frozen Brandy Alexanders). The ATC hearing is on July 3, so the opening will be some time after that.

In back-dated news: Just recently, Floyd County Brewing Company expanded with a new seating area situated just down the hill from the main building. The Grain Haus is separated from the original structure by the Biergarten, and it's up and rolling.

The Grain Haus (129 W. Main Street) "is a dual purpose building used for storing brewing grains for Floyd County Brewing Company, including a tap room with 25 draught taps and 12+ cans & bottle options."

There have been reports of Eh Cumpari mobile pizza sightings, and so my assumption is that food from the FCBC kitchen is not being served at The Grain Haus. Corrections are greatly appreciated (Sunday afternoon update: Brian Hampton explains all):

Currently, The Grain Haus offers a limited bar bites menu from Floyd County Brewing, food trucks such as on Sundays and anyone can bring in food from local restaurants as well.

It's been known for a while that Dragon King's Daughter is moving from the corner of Elm and Bank to 129 W. Market. The time appears to be nearing.

Dragon King's Daughter: "Contemporary Asian fusion restaurant."

From DKD's social media.

Following are the bar and restaurant "coming soons," either with ATC license hearings completed (Longboard's) or applications on the docket June 5 (Double Barrel and Pints&union).

From the folks who brought you Exchange and Brookyn, Longboard’s Taco & Tiki is coming to downtown New Albany in 2018.

Hot off the presses from Ian Hall. Left unsaid is the location; this may or may not be it ...

GREEN MOUSE SAYS: Dine Company + 302 Pearl Street buildout = ?

... and then there's this for corroboration:

Irrespective of the specific storefront, here's the press release.

BRAND Hospitality Group is back at it.

Longboard’s Taco & Tiki to open in Downtown New Albany in early 2018.

The Southern Indiana dining scene continues to see growth as proprietors Ian and Nikki Hall, owners of The Exchange Pub + Kitchen and Brooklyn and the Butcher, announce their latest project, Longboard’s Taco & Tiki

Described by Ian Hall as what would be considered a hybrid of fast casual dining, Longboard’s Taco & Tiki looks to deliver flavorful chef-inspired tacos, tiki-influenced cocktails, in a relaxing, cool, California beach vibe.

“We’ve had the opportunity over the last two years to do some traveling, both to Mexico as well as some coastal cities in the states. We found ourselves really inspired by the cocktail movement of the classic-style tiki bars,” Hall said. “We thought, what better way to pair our new tiki cocktail concept than alongside our take on the taco shop.”

Earlier this year, the Hall’s other two restaurants both took home some notable awards in Louisville Magazine’s Best Of awards. The Exchange Pub + Kitchen was awarded “Best Restaurant in Southern Indiana”, while Brooklyn and the Butcher took home “Best New Restaurant”. It’s a reputation for excellence that owner Ian Hall says he doesn’t take lightly.

“With two restaurants that have been so well received by our guests and the city of New Albany, we know how important it is that we maintain the high standards of exceptional service and exciting food and beverage in everything we do, including this one or any new projects in the pipeline,” Hall said.

"We have set our own bar very high and we will continue to challenge our teams every shift. In order to be known as a strong independent restaurant group, we must focus on using great local products and ingredients, local purveyors, hand crafted cocktails, and above all, offering stellar hospitality to our guests. It has become part of who we have become as a collective group, and it’s our company’s culture. Longboard’s Taco & Tiki will continue to build on this foundation and strive to not only meet, but to exceed those standards. I think this will be a great compliment to the brands we already represent as well as a nice addition to Downtown New Albany.”

What you can expect from the kitchen team at Longboard’s will be a flavor-packed menu. The heartbeat of the menu will consist of 8-10 styles of tacos influenced by the traditional street food of Latin America, alongside of some interesting takes on chef-inspired dishes. The menu will also consist of Poke bowls with rice, seafood ceviches, salads with fresh local greens, fresh tortillas, and house made salsas and guacamoles.

The bar program will consist of some interesting plays on traditional margaritas and tequila cocktails, as well as a nice variety of the rums from the islands and tiki-inspired cocktails, both classic and modern styles.

Hall expects to open late in the first quarter of 2018. “We have been working on this conceptually for the last 8 months on the developmental side, so it’s a nice change of pace to go from paper to construction last week. We are going to take our time with this one to make sure we build the right team, atmosphere, and hospitality, and when we do we will be ready to ride the wave.”

In the meantime, Hall encourages those curious about the project to watch their social media as more info will be announced to the general public over the next few months.
