NASH: What a bizarre city council meeting
One Southern Indiana left the meeting with $30,000 of New Albany taxpayers money that they can use to support the unpopular Ohio River Bridge Project or any politician that they see fit. Next year these city council members will have to answer for this vote, and I am sure that the result will be anything but bizarre.

If it was Wrigley Field the ball would be out on Waveland Ave. Nice job, Matt.
1SI does great job. The liberals crying about the support of the people backed this year are not true business people. This was not a GOP or Dem. Issue it was a pro business issue.
VetteMan,
I am on record being against the payment to 1sI well before the endorsements came out. Others I know of have been against them for years.
You say they do a great job. What have they done? Give me a specific example of how they have helped the city of New Albany. Is it worthy of $30/70,000?
Matt
Well beyond the political endorsements, New Albany's budget is already $2 million in the hole. There isn't money to be paying 1Si (or the Japanese company, for that matter), so why was this even in question in the first place?? I'd much rather my police and fire personnel be paid than sending taxpayer money off to private organizations. Hello, priorities!
Greetings, VetteMan

Matt,
Lets start with existing businesses with issues and helping bring in new business into the area that brings in Jobs & Tax Dollars that will help Karens issue. Programs like Minority & Womans Business Owners Conference, Greener Region Conference & Legislative Agenda to all help businesses in the region.
Like in most communities a % of our tax dollars goes to Econ. Dev. and community welfare programs that you or I might not agree with, but we don't get to choose. There has alway been tax dollars that go to attract new business that creates jobs which equals new tax dollars. You hurt the Chamber you hurt the community.
New Albany is hurting and we need people to help bring in new business and new jobs not create problems that make them go elsewhere out side our community. My favorite saying of your not helping, get the hell out of the way.
FYI: VetteMan has promptly complied with blog policy.
Thank you for doing so.
What is a true business person?
Now that VetteMan has been cleared for takeoff, I believe Jeff's question is the most relevant.
I am opposed to the chamber's decision to pursue endorsements. I am in business. How am I not a "true" businessman?
I believe a true business person man or woman should be in favor of less red tape, less taxes for it self and the people in the area of the business as well as it's clients. I know it's not a PC word but profit is the true life of a company.
This would increase dollars in the companies bank account and the pocket of it's customers. I believe attraction of more companies in the area will be better in the long run. If your community and you being part of this community is anti growth it will come back to bite you in the ASS.
No growth + no jobs +no employed customers = no future
for your business.
The funny thing to me is the staff of the chamber that some of you slam, is the same people that would help you find ways to grow your business. If you would set aside the hatred you have for a few on the board or it's leader.
Those same people live in this area and support your business. I don't agree with everything one person says or does.
I just don't try to hurt all when I disagree with a few.

Was the unrestrained excess of the Robber Baron era an example of less red tape?
"The funny thing to me is the staff of the chamber that some of you slam, is the same people that would help you find ways to grow your business."
Actually, those are the same people who told the business I work for that we wouldn't really have a place in 1SI due to our size, but they'd happily take our dues and let us network with them. Great bunch.
Rodger : "Was the unrestrained excess of the Robber Baron era an example of less red tape?"
Really thats all you've got? This is the 21st Century. I know with your business, the government has put things on you that make doing business harder. I have a friend that has a pizza place in Louisville that tells me that it gets harder and harder to make a living and he has a very good business. Maybe you are doing things so well that you could care less on the Taxes and fees you pay.
bayernfan:
I sorry but you comment is just BS. You need to ask Rodger. The last time I was in his restaurant he was a member of 1SI. I bet he has used the Chamber and there help in the past.
Only when the board not the staff chose to support four people three of witch have a (R) by there name does this hit piece start.
Would you change your mind if all four where Democrat? Again this was based on pro business issues.
It may or may not be all I have, but I notice you didn't try to answer it. I try not to waste 95 mph fastballs on the game's first pitch.
History provides numerous and unceasing examples of unregulated business running amok. It's simplistic to chant "red tape." Depends on what the red tape is, and if it's really red tape. I don't enjoy the stringent regulatory regime for brewing, but I know it exists because we have far too much religion. Que sera.
My experience with 1Si is exhaustively documented. In short, I found almost nothing of use except clerical skills to process a loan from someone else's pot (Horseshoe). You can read my Tribune columns or search this blog for more detailed comments.
There once was a plaque on the wall. Just the other day I took it down because in the wake of 1Si's political endorsements, I asked the organization to remove references to my business from their site.
"Hating" people there has nothing to do with it. Some things 1Si does are good, other not. Supporting tolls, the bridges project an endorsements tilt the balance to bad.
Rodger,
You and I agree on somethings. I think God has a place in our country, but some people like to shove it in your face. I think some laws around liquor is over the top. It's the bad apples that spoil the batch. :-)
I bet a lot of people would be infavor of just a East End Bridge with out tolls. I travel across the bridge every day and I hate the idea of any tolls on any bridge. We could free up a lot of truck trafic with a mandatory by-pass on a EE bridge for trucks going thru Louisville.
The problem is there is so many in the Louisville political arena that want both bridges to be built they have pushed it to this point. Now its build both or not at all and that hurts us all much more. I lived in FL. There where tolls on a bridge I traveled each day, I hated it. If that bridge was not there it would have cost me more in wasted time and gas then the .25 each way.
BTW. I know a lot of the staff of 1SI. They beleave in helping every business no mater the polictal view if it's membership or owners.
Would still like a answer to My question this time!
"I sorry but you comment is just BS"
Believe what you want, it matters little to me, but I was one of three people in that meeting with the guy from 1SI. Those were his words, not mine.
Would you change your mind if all four where Democrat? Again this was based on pro business issues.
I believe 1Si's decision to endorse candidates is gravely mistaken, and the party affiliation does not matter. If it's really the chamber, and really is helping to lift the economy as a whole (both dubious propositions), then it mustn't be partisan.
I also object to the implicit connection of "business" with "Republican."
It's unfortunate that 1Si's board lacks the good sense to separate the organization's occasional good deed for small business from self-serving political chicanery but then, that's their decision and not ours, isn't it?
If they don't want their staff associated with disinformation campaigns, they could easily stop engaging in them. That, however, would require a degree of honesty that they as yet can't quite seem to muster.
Until then, the comparatively little resource they spend showing any regard for the majority of small businesses and citizens in Southern Indiana will continue to be undermined by the board's very public insolence.
"I also object to the implicit connection of "business" with "Republican."
Rodger,
As a business owner many would think you are rich. You should help the people that are of less means.
Let's say I come into you Rest. every Saturday at say 10pm and empty you from all your cash. As a smart business man you would be pissed and call the police. You may even start hiring armed gards, arm your self etc.
Democratcts call that sharing the wealth. Taking from the rich and giving it to the poor. You may even make a profit that they say is to large. So they raise you taxes because you are rich compared to others.
Republicans call that stealing it's that easy. The only deferent thing here the robber is wearing a Obama mask.
And before some one says we have to pay taxes for Police, Fire and National Sec. Etc. I agree.
The problem is for some reason when you work hard and start to make a good living, someone says you are rich and you have to share the wealth.
I say I have given enough, haven't you?
