Nash exercises his freedom of the press.

C'mon, Matt. Give NAC some love and name-drop! My own thought at the "get the hell out of the way" admonition is that it implies the existence of only one way. One Southern Indiana has its, er, way; shall we describe it benignly as the way that amply rewards traditional economic elites?

But it is not the way calculated to work best in (for instance) a revitalizing downtown business district. Matt's critic doesn't seem to grasp that part.

NASH: Everybody should have an opinion

... Someone on a local blog stated that all of the criticism of 1si was coming from Democrats after the local “Chamber of Commerce” endorsed Republicans in the upcoming election. While shooting down and never answering my specific question he stated “if your not helping, get the hell out of the way.”

Nicely done, Mr. Nash.

Now, I have this certain scene from the movie Animal House running through my head.

I fought with that for a while. You almost got mentioned twice.

I did "show some Love" at my blog post.

I thought if I mentioned your blog I would also have to mention my critic by his pseudonym and I couldn't possibly write that down without laughing.

Mark,

Is it the one where Bluto is outside watering the yard and he turns around and says:

"come on in, grab a brew, don't cost nothin'"

Iamhoosier said...

Nope, the scene where Delta Tau Chi is kicked out without having an opportunity to present another side. Marching out singing

That's it. That's the one that came to mind this morning after reading your column. I can't pick a favorite scene. Too many to choose from.

"While shooting down and never answering my specific question"

Lets see. I gave you several examples of the good things that 1Si does maybe you should read the post again.

2nd example:
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – (October 15, 2010) – The Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County (HFFC) has made a $100,000 donation to the Small Business Revolving Loan Fund program administered by One Southern Indiana.  The loan program was first announced in December 2007 and initially capitalized by a $250,000 grant from the foundation.  The HFFC fund was created to assist emerging private business enterprises based in Floyd County with expanding operations and retaining or increasing employees.

Coupled with the announcement of this new grant are three additional businesses named as the fund’s latest recipients.  La Rosita Mexican Grill, New Albany Golf, Inc., and FlipC Gymnastics each have received funds to expand and improve business operations.  Prior HFFC grant recipients include PTG Silicones, The New Albanian Brewing Company, and the Calumet Club.

La Rosita Mexican Grill has received a $50,000 loan to help fund expansion costs at its new downtown New Albany location in a building that sat vacant at 1515 East Market St. for many years.  New Albany Springs Golf Course has recently reopened under new ownership with the assistance of a $45,000 loan.  FlipC Gymnastics received a loan of $21,295, which will be used to purchase gymnastics and cheerleading equipment.

“We really couldn’t have done it without this funding - the Horseshoe Foundation really wants to see Floyd County businesses succeed.  One Southern Indiana and the Southeast Indiana Small Business Development Center were also an enormous help to me throughout the loan application process.”

“Without this loan assistance from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, purchasing this iconic golf course would not have been possible,” said Cary Hammond, owner of New Albany Springs Golf Course.  “ The Horseshoe Foundation and One Southern Indiana truly believe in the power helping locally-owned business thrive.”

The Southeast Indiana Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) assists loan applicants with details of the application process and any required paperwork.  “It is great to see so many different organizations such as the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, One Southern Indiana, and the Southeast ISBDC work together for the betterment of the community by supporting small businesses,” said Jeremy Couch, business advisor with the ISBDC.

You will find a familiar Co. Name that has benefited from the help of 1Si in the past. Your very own hypocrite ( The New Albanian Brewing Company ).

As to the Get the Hell out of the way. That was directed to your one sided "NO Tolls" view.

I dont want tolls any more then you, but we need the bridges to be built. If we just plug our ears and close our eyes to the need of the bridges to just win a fight then its you that is in the way.

No one is saying there is going to be tolls just there might be, lets hope not. Remember "HOPE" thats big for you Liberals.

I believe I'm going to have to step into the kitchen and grab some popcorn for this one.

Wow, 1SI helped fill out some forms. That's certainly worth $30,000 from NA. For $30k you could hire a clerk to do that full time for the whole year. Horseshoe Foundation provides all the loan, that's the important part.

Is that the best you can come with?

Why do we need two bridges and a total re-work of spaghetti junction?

"No one is saying there is going to be tolls just there might be"

That's wrong. Completely false. It's been stated by everyone from Your Man Mitch to the Bridges Authority itself that tolls will be needed to complete the project.

"Tolls, in my opinion I believe will ultimately have to be some component of this," said Kerry Stemler, Co-Chair of the Louisville and Southern Indiana Bridge Authority."

"If we try to do this through the gas tax people might end up paying more," said Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. "It may be a little less visible to them but there isn't going to be a free bridge. My stance is it's (tolls) the only way to do it."

"Is that the best you can come with?"

Ok, I don't work for 1Si so I don't know all they do. I do use they service and I'm a member. For you I will make a call and have them tell me so I can share with you.

On the Tolls if My man Mitch said that and if he is correct and there is no way to build the bridge or bridges with out the Tolls, are you saying you are against building the bridges.

If so you need to get your head out of the dirt.
Louisville and Southern IN. are loosing jobs and money because of the traffic. I understand you can't get past the point of people disagree with you and your friends on this blog and you have decided not to open your eyes to the real problem. I have told you several times I don't want tolls any more then you. I just want the bridges built.

In my life time!!

The point is if we have no other option but to toll those who use the bridge. Raise taxes on business or property owners in the area. Raise the gas tax or not to build them at all and hurt the community as a hole. Where do you stand? The tolls are the lesser of evils. I hate the idea of any new tax or tax increase. Come up with some ideas to help or " Get the Hell out of the way "

Your first answer was
...Programs like Minority & Womans Business Owners Conference, Greener Region Conference & Legislative Agenda to all help businesses in the region.

What kind of return on investment is that. I am sure that these were important meetings for their target audience but how did that benefit the citizens of New Albany.

Your second answer is that they basically shuffle paperwork for The Horseshoe Foundation. I have talked to Roger about what 1sI did for him, he said that Dalby estimated they used 100 labor hours on the paperwork for the loan he received. That seems like an amazing amount of time to spend on administrative cost, if it is the truth. This doesn't seem like a very efficient use of our tax dollars.

If they want money from the city of New Albany, they should present a plan. There should be a timeline for execution of the plan and they should have a measurable goal. Short of this I cannot support giving them tax money.

Matthew Nash said...

Have you been to a "Bridges Authority" meeting?

Why have they requested a waiver from DOT to toll existing bridges if there is no plan to toll?

Why do they already know what type of tolling system they plan to use?

Why have they studied collection % around the country?

They have done a lot of research on tolls relative to research on alternatives that would accomplish their goals without them.

What jobs are we losing because of traffic?

I was at a meeting where someone made the statement that the bridges will create 50,000 jobs. They didn't mention a study or state where these jobs will come from. And they say opponents are creating a lot of misinformation.

Show me a study that says the Downtown Bridge will help with traffic.

What if they built an East End Bridge right now (cost is about 25% of total budget) and it improved traffic to the point that another bridge is not necessary.

What if they used part of the remaining 3 billion to design a plan for alternative transportation (light rail, mass transit)

Why does the "Authority" refuse to listen to any alternative plan?

Over the last several years many businesses have had to change the way they do business or risk closing forever. Those that were able to change direction survived, those that used the same plan that they had in 2002 struggled or closed.(blockbuster, circuit city, US automobile industry)

The "authority" is still sticking to the plan that they came up with 8 years ago (record of decision)

Why is it wrong to question that plan when so many of the variables have changed?
