There'll be a Republican candidate for mayor in the fall. According to the News and Tribune's Daniel Suddeath yesterday, it will not be councilman Kevin Zurschmiede.
Had expected to hear back from GOP by today for mayoral candidate. Was told Councilman Kevin Zurschmiede declined after consideration.
Recently the Green Mouse was told it won't be Mark Seabrook, either.
Businessman David White, a nominal Democrat, is challenging incumbent Jeff Gahan in the May primary. There is nothing in White's platform to indicate any interest in what we'd view as ideologically-framed Democratic social issues; rather, he freely describes himself as a fiscally conservative Democrat.
If the GOP cannot find a credible mayoral candidate (why would it bother until after the primary results are posted?), would David White as mayor be entirely objectionable to the Republicans?
After all, the one thing about which White, Chris Lane and I can all agree is a burning desire to have Jeff Gahan return to the respectable private sector vocation of veneer sales. Speaking personally, I'd dearly love the opportunity to campaign against two Republicans for the price of one.
