Level Up Bakery announces it will be closing.

Regrettably, the Level Up Bakery at 1001 Vincennes Street (right across from New Albany High School) has announced its imminent closing.

The text from Friday's Facebook post follows; it mentions the possibility of another two Saturdays of business in February during the winding-down, but it might be best to check the page first.

I concede to feeling personally culpable in the sense that we didn't go there often enough. My alibis are familiar. We don't go out as much as before ... there are so many places to choose from nowadays ... and because of Pints&union my orientation is toward downtown. I tried the best I could to let people know Level Up was there. In the end, small independent business is an extremely hard nut to crack.

Were it otherwise, and the chains the ones to fail -- not the indies.

Level Up Bakery is feeling sad.

This is the post we've been dreading, but we've finally finished everything we needed to in order to be able to make the announcement. We are closing our doors at the end of this month. There are many things we can say were the stepping stones of this moment, but in the end it all comes down to there was no traffic. We have loved every minute we were here with the amazing people we had. We loved the kids from across the street. We loved the game nights that we had, and all of the fun stories that came out of them. We had so many plans that we couldn't wait to bring to life, but in the end we won't be able to do them. We have plans with MESA kitchen during the month of March, and those we will still do, but there will be no physical location for us. We might be able to do the Farmers Market during the summer, but it all will come down to how this all rides out in the next couple of weeks.

With that being said, we WILL be open on Saturdays so that we can try and push out all of our food and have a smooth closing. We haven't decided on what to do with the equipment yet, but if you or anyone you know is interested then PM us here. And although our business didn't succeed here, maybe another one can. So if you know of someone that is looking for a place to start a business and needs some good neighbors (seriously, these people are amazing and will do anything and everything to help you out too) hit us up as well and we'll get you started. We were going to release this video when we were ready for March, so now we will just do it for fun. Again, we are still doing the MESA kitchen things, just no bakery here on Vincennes 😞 You all have been awesome. Stay awesome, stay nerdy, and keep an eye out for us with Nerd Louisville doing some game nights there running games and having fun. Love you all.

Preview: 410 Bakery coming to 140 East Main Street in downtown New Albany.

From the web site.

Earlier we reported that Donum Dei Brewery will be using the rear patio of the former Abe's Rental building at 140 East Main as a pop-up beer garden during Harvest Homecoming.

I'd heard a bakery was coming there, but only just now found the web site.

Originating in the back of Coffee Crossing’s Jeffersonville location, the 410 Bakery is a modern bakery growing into its first retail location in downtown New Albany. The bakery will offer small batch artisan breads, traditional French and modern pastries, and great coffee.

And more of the story:

It wasn’t long before Emily (Butts) ran out of space. With a third coffee shop opening in the fall of 2016 it was time to start looking for a new location. An old building at 140 East Main Street, originally built in 1929 as a gas station, might not have seemed like an ideal location at first glance, but it possessed a very unique style that could not be passed up. Unlike its small beginnings in the back of a coffee shop, the new 410 Bakery location will be a full retail bakery offering small batch artisan breads, modern pastries, and a coffee bar.

Duh! I know Emily's dad; we went to university together.

Best of luck to her -- is she decides to make European-style bread, I'll never leave the joint, and anyway, it's exciting to have the historic building back in use.

FLASH: Adrienne & Company is open at 133 E. Market.

It's a cyptic pop-up notice on Fb, but know it: Adrienne & Company's location in New Albany is open. It's on Market where the Frenchman used to be.

Open in New Albany today until 2 pm. Come check out the new place. 133 E. Market Street.

Monday, January 04, 2016

Adrienne & Co. is coming soon to 133 East Market Street, which remains one-way.

Add another eatery to the list of arrivals.

Adrienne & Co. will operate in the former Louis Le Francais space, which New Albanians know as the Bergman Building. The space wasn't empty for long, and food and dining entrepreneurs continue to enter the game in spite of being unable to depend on Dan Coffey's patronage.

The Red Dragon Pub is open on Main Street, and Taco Steve is up and running in Destinations Booksellers. Coming soon are Brooklyn and the Butcher and the Gospel Bird.

Homework questions:

Given the cakes and doughnuts, are there implications for Sweet Stuff?
Given the menu: Whither Bread and Breakfast?

Welcome to New Gahania, guys. Just imagine how beneficial two way streets will be to your forthcoming business, assuming they ever do.

Popular Jeffersonville eatery Adrienne & Co. Bakery is making the leap over to New Albany.

The bakery known for its donuts and intricate cakes is opening in a 2,600-square-foot space at 133 E. Market St. sometime in March. Adrienne Holland and Bernie Pasquantino co-own the business.

Let's catch up with John Gonder's blogs.

As expected, good stuff.

First, on the emerging tolling heist.

Your Money's No Good Here

Jimmy Buffet's heading out to San Francisco. The white pants are being put away. Plaudits and platitudes about the heroism of the workplace echo throughout the land. It is Labor Day.

Here along one border within the nation, we are bowing to the supremacy of speed. We are allowing the bottom-line geeks who have somehow become transportation planners to determine that we need no hand-to-hand contact to float the Two Bridges Boondoggle. We shall, as those grandees determine, engage in the transportational equivalent of drone warfare. The over large Two Bridges plan has an over large price tag which must and will be funded by intermittent heists of the populace hereabouts. (Set aside for now that New Albany will bear the brunt of increased pass-through traffic of the cheapskates who don't want to pay an extra eight dollars to visit Aunt Ginny or buy something in Indiana.)

Second, on the absence of bread -- not dough, but the edible stuff. Actually this one might be resolved quite soon.

Waiting For Good Dough

Years passed in our little town aside the Ohio River. Years of decline layered upon years of decline. Even a few years of false starts passed in the same town, before they were layered over by more decline. During one of the false starts I remember watching an evening of mud wrestling--at the Grand. One of the young girls who maneuvered in the pit that night had to take her bows quickly, because she had to,"get showered, and shampooed, and get to work at The Dodge House", as the owner of the Grand, the emcee of the evening explained.

Here's your bakery, John.

The former Schad Law Office on the corner of Main and Bank is being transformed into Bread and Breakfast.

Artisan breads, health bars, and vegetable based muffins and loafs. Personalized banners and cards. I try to include local ingredients in my creations.

I began business literally as a roadside stand on Hwy 150 selling artisan bread and baked goods and also have sold at the local Farmer's Markets. I am currently rehabbing a building located on Main Street in New Albany and hope to be open for business in my retail location prior to the harvest Homecoming. My retail location will operate as "Bread and Breakfast".

Coming soon to my new retail location at the corner of Bank and Main in the old Schad Law Office building.
