Brick lamp pedestals removed from Veterans' Plaza because Irv's "safe" drivers keep hitting them.

The topic is New Albany's Veterans' Plaza. First, a few photos illustrating progress and regress.

The wide spot in Market Street between 10th and 11th, where New Albany's Veterans' Plaza is positioned, once held the smaller of the city's two public markets. The larger one was downtown on Market between State and Pearl. At some point it became the city's memorial to veterans, on an island in a one-way street.

Our Veterans' Plaza was refurbished beginning in 2005, as explained by Chris Morris at the (then) Tribune.

Since the brick lamp pedestals were installed on the 10th Street side of the plaza, circa 2005, I've lost track of how many times they've been damaged by drivers navigating automobiles along a one-way street described as "safe" by the likes of Irv Stumler.

Self-inflicted dementia aside, apparently the decision has been taken recently to pack it in and remove them. As of last week, they were gone.
