The topic is New Albany's Veterans' Plaza. First, a few photos illustrating progress and regress.

After (October, 2016):
The wide spot in Market Street between 10th and 11th, where New Albany's Veterans' Plaza is positioned, once held the smaller of the city's two public markets. The larger one was downtown on Market between State and Pearl. At some point it became the city's memorial to veterans, on an island in a one-way street.

Our Veterans' Plaza was refurbished beginning in 2005, as explained by Chris Morris at the (then) Tribune.
Since the brick lamp pedestals were installed on the 10th Street side of the plaza, circa 2005, I've lost track of how many times they've been damaged by drivers navigating automobiles along a one-way street described as "safe" by the likes of Irv Stumler.
Give Veterans Plaza a break: Two way streets now ... no study necessary (November 14, 2013)
Self-inflicted dementia aside, apparently the decision has been taken recently to pack it in and remove them. As of last week, they were gone.
Drivers.
They're why we can't have nice things.

Never a dull moment in Incompatibility City.
Lashing out from his lair off Bono Road, Doctor Tom has struck the Muscle Monkey Grill (Little Chef). Let's hope it isn't serious.
(Wednesday evening update: It isn't serious. Permit snafu only. Don't you wish the Health Department refrained from the Scarlet Letter approach and explained its action? Then again, at least they didn't stage an inept photo op implying their chosen target was harboring bacteria)
Seems a bit cold this time of year for Exclusively Rental Property New Albany, but what do I know? Where are the cocktail weenies and Miller Lite?
Heavens, didn't this just happen? NAC's last report (and a reverse camera angle) came out last November. Dude, has anyone seen the insurance agent?
Nope. Never a dull moment in Insipidity City.

Give Veterans Plaza a break: Two way streets now ... no study necessary.
Once again, reckless drivers have damaged Veterans Plaza, which lies on Market Street between 10th and 11th.
EVEN IF there are compelling reasons why Elm and Spring must remain drag strips (we think there are not), then can any traffic engineer living (or dead) explain why Market must endure the chronic misuse?
Below are past reports of Market Street destruction. Slowed two-way traffic would prevent this destruction, wouldn't it? What might a traffic study prove that numerous pairs of eyes don't already know?
Why, oh why, must this city be so ridiculously backward?
February 20, 2012: That wasn't a pipe bomb, actually.
June 17, 2012: Veterans Plaza is back in shape.
The repair work at Veterans Plaza was completed before Memorial Day, but I kept forgetting to take a photo of the progress. It's a seamless restoration, but here is what it looked like on February 20.

That wasn't a pipe bomb, actually.
I was told by two neighbors that the destruction shown above was caused by two drunk drivers in a week's time. That's unverified, but makes sense.
