Don't miss the 2012 New Albany Public Art Walk, Saturday June 23, 6:00-9:00 pm (rain date June 30)!
Featuring live music on Bank Street and NABC Beer Garden from 7:00 pm-Midnight
After starting at the Carnegie Center, visitors can drop in at the six artworks on the Art Walk between 6:00-9:00 pm to speak with the artists and learn more about the project themes. A walking tour booklet for the 2012 Public Art Project, which includes a map of the 2011 and 2012 installations, and information about the 2012 artists and historical themes, will be available at the sites. During the Art Walk, participants can make their own three-color screenprinted poster designed by Ron Jasin of Madpixel Art and Design and facilitated by local artists and volunteers. The New Albany Public Art Project Facebook page (www.facebook.com/napublicart) will reveal several sneak peeks of the poster design in the days leading up to the Art Walk on June 23. Visitors can also explore the art with SCVNGR and Take it Artside! mobile apps.
From 7:00 pm to midnight, Art Walk participants can enjoy live music featuring Ten Penny Nail and Midnight Hour Sound System, and a New Albanian Brewing Company beer garden, on Bank Street between Spring and Elm Streets.
Six public artworks will be featured on the June 23 Art Walk, including the following three new works for 2012 (clockwise from lower left):
1. To celebrate the history of Parks & Recreation, Louisville artist/architect Nathan Smith has created a MicroPark on one of New Albany’s sidewalks. This wooden structure takes its form from the Ohio River and provides a gathering space for the community with seating and edible plants that the community is invited to share.
2. The theme of Neighborhoods & Architecture is honored by Jacob Stanley of Greencastle, Indiana. His artwork Sweat Equity begins with a grid on the ground, representing city streets and neighborhoods, that then turns upward to become posts that support a sculpture of a house.
3. New Albany artist R. Michael Wimmer created a metal sculpture, Growth of Education, that tells the story of New Albany’s rich history of Education. Wimmer states, “This sculpture grows out of the earth as a surreal plant form, which flowers into objects that symbolize education in our city."
In addition to the artists, Art Walk sites will host historians, demonstrators and community leaders who will speak with participants about the historic themes interpreted by the artists. The Art Walk will include the following artworks installed in 2011:
Resartus, by Dominic Guarnaschelli, Theme: Textiles, Wholesale to Retail
Nature’s Calligraphy, by Janis Martin, Ruth Andrews and Michael Slaksi, Theme: Farmer’s Markets
Time Ghost tower-casts #1 and #2, by Scott Scarboro, Theme: Newspapers & Broadcasting
The project partners, the Carnegie Center for Art & History, Inc. and the New Albany Urban Enterprise Association, have committed their own funds to the project. Additionally, individuals and organizations that have sponsored the project include: Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, The Indiana Arts Commission, the General Mills Foundation, Your Community Bank, the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, The News and Tribune, and Michael and Noelle Gohmann.
