We Are New Albany's Political Social is this Saturday morning, April 7, at 11:00 a.m.

We Are New Albany came together last year as the principled local counterweight to Mayor Jeff Gahan's putsch (the hostile takeover of public housing), and to give public housing residents a voice in their future.

Gahan acted as he did because he had the power to do so, reasoning there would be only token opposition to his opportunism. He was mistaken; there's nothing especially "democratic" in any of it, and the best way to remind him of this fact is the exercise of one's vote.

April 9 is the last day to register to vote in the May 8 primary. Here's the information about WANA's event this Saturday, one in a series of mobilizations aimed at delivering a message to Gahan and his functionaries: "No demolition without a plan to replace!"

The NABC Weekend: It's my blog and I'll tout if I want to.

Events season mercifully continues winding down, but first, a capstone of sorts.

New Albany's annual Harvest Homecoming downtown takeover begins this Saturday with the customary parade. For various reasons, the Curmudgeons are unable to host a party at their residence this year, so instead, we'll be at Bank Street Brewhouse sifting the usual floating dross for unanticipated nuggets of wisdom.

Personally, I quite enjoy playing annoying mosquito to Harvest Homecoming's orange-clad 800-lb gorilla. In terms of my business, we simplify matters and seek to have as much fun as possible amid the absurdity. Consequently, there'll be another Fringe Fest at Bank Street Brewhouse.

The coming weekend brings an event that was unexpected when first announced, and now strikes me as very interesting.

NABC and other regional beers at the inaugural Louder Than Life Festival

Why not craft beer with the likes of Judas Priest, Korn and Kid Rock? NABC is joined by BBC, Falls City, Alltech and West Sixth. Collectively, these breweries represent choice ... what a concept!

It might be easier to describe what is not happening today.

There's a full slate of Farmers Market activities, including an Iron Chef competition featuring downtown chefs and farm produce and meats. I''ll be there with a few progressive beer samples to bolster Chef Josh's effort.

The historic home tour is this morning and afternoon.

The home tour after party is a bourbon, bbq and brew fundraiser for the Arts Council, and it begins around 6. Richard will be there with Rosa.

Festina Latina takes place at the Amphitheater this afternoon and evening.

Rock the Rocks, the annual Falls of the Ohio State Park fundraising gig, is tonight. NABC will be there, too.

There's no time for links, so get out there, do some things, and if you see political candidates roaming around (yep, it's time for that), ask them about their stances on tolling existing bridges to build the ORBP boondoggle. Many of them don't want to talk about it ... so you should.

Carnegie Center's annual fundraiser, A Taste for Art & History, is Friday night (Sept. 10) and tickets are still available.

Starting on Saturday (February 20) at 9am, State Representative Ed Clere will be in the Dueling Grounds Cafe hosting "A Conversation on Education". This is your second opporunity to talk with your legislator regarding education legislation and voice your opinion.

At 11am, our "Vacation 101" series gets underway with Mark Bliss of Bliss Travel in New Albany. Mr. Bliss will be here to talk about travel tips, hot spots and security issues. He'll also answer any questions you may have.

To top off our day, our Local Artist series continues with the opening of Jeremy Datillo's art display at 2pm. Jeremy will be on hand to meet the public so please come out and support your local artists.

Other upcoming events - Tuesday, February 23rd we'll have Steve Kozarovich, publisher of the New Albany Tribune in the Dueling Grounds Cafe for a discussion of newspaper coverage of local events.

Thursday February 25th our "Vacation 101" series will conclude with Mark Bliss of Bliss Travel.

And Saturday, March 6th Destinations Booksellers revives its series on public issues with Steve Wiser, an architect who will present "An Alternative Toll-Free Bridge Proposal" starting at 11am.

"Fertile Minds" is up and running and we've had some wonderful comments about it! Paul Hankins and Karen Gillenwater have chosen a few books that they have enjoyed or are currently reading and we've put them on display in the bookstore just past the fiction section. We'll have two new patrons coming up in just a couple of weeks.

Our private bookings for book clubs and other clubs are going well, but we still have plenty of room for your group! Just give us a call and set up a time you'd like to meet! Remember, even though the store is closed on Sundays and Mondays, you can still book meeting space on those days and we're happy to open up the kitchen to serve food.

Destinations Booksellers will be hosting a series of political candidate "Meet and Greets" beginning in March. A calendar of the dates candidates will be appearing will be released soon.

Tonight: Cigar Faction at Steinert's.

While not all intending to revisit old battlegrounds, it remains that as long as the absence of a smoking ordinance in New Albany continues to enable the proprietor's choice as it pertains to tobacco use at our food and drink establishments, there is an opportunity for those so desiring to serve as niche markets for metro Louisville cigar smokers.

We've started work on the patio at Bank Street Brewhouse to wrap it. Christo was unavailable, so we hired a contractor. Equipped with heaters, soon it will be a suitable area to enjoy a fine cigar. Of course, some pubs and restaurants still choose to allow smoking indoors.

In connection with beer, I wrote about cigars today in LEO: Mug Shots: Beers and cigars: I say puff away.

Like better beer, my cigar is a force that unites geography, history, agriculture and scientific progress, burning ever so slowly, emitting puffy smoke rings — the fruition of a long, patient process of growth, cultivation, harvesting, curing, hand rolling, packing and distribution.

Better yet, there's an opportunity tonight to patronize a downtown business, enjoy an adult beverage, and snip the end of a Dominican.

Cigar Faction - January 2010

Cigar Faction is looking for a places in Metro Louisville to enjoy cigars and craft beer. Steinert's Grill and Pub in downtown New Albany is one of them: Spacious, well-ventilated, a cigar-friendly staff, good food, good beer, and a well-stocked bar. NABC's Mt. Lee (California Common in the City of Angels) will be on tap, and J. Shepherd of Louisville will have cigars available for purchase with door prize drawings every half hour beginning at 6:30.

So, who's in? I should be there by 6:30 p.m., following the UEA board meeting, and am saving a wondeful Ashton for the occasion.

Two events this week at Destinations!

On Tuesday, January 19th, author and motivational speaker Robert Mueller will join us for his program on "The 15 Best Ways to Improve Your Life". We'll get started at 6pm!

Then on Friday, January 22nd, author Keven McQueen will be in the store to sign copies of his new book Strange Tales of Crime and Murder in Southern Indiana. The book features a story about New Albany and Keven has more stories for us regarding our city! 7 pm is the start time for what will surely be a fun evening!

You've probably noticed by now but our hours have changed for both Destinations and Dueling Grounds Cafe. We are now open from 9am - 9pm Tuesday through Saturday! We will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. However, if you have a group that needs a meeting place, Dueling Grounds will be available on Sundays and Mondays for private bookings. Just call us at 944-5116 to set up the day and time!

We're always interested in hosting book clubs, meetings and other various ventures. Be on the lookout for some new groups and events coming up, including a Socrates Cafe, Science Cafe and other groups!
