The one of Jennie's three sons who lives in Plymouth is John, and his partner is Julie, and they invited us to join them for a visit to Totnes, a town up the rail line roughly 25 minutes from Plymouth.
The four of us hit it off back in 2009 during our first visit, so I knew it was going to be a great day. Indeed, it proved to be forgettably memorable in the delightful way that beer drinkers instinctively understand.
Of course, their company was first-rate, but Totnes proved to be a gem. It had been described to us as a place for "hippies" to feel comfortable. Perhaps a better way to look at it would be through comparisons with other "counter-cultural" locales -- say, Boulder, or perhaps any such place dismissed by FOX News as pinko-leftist.
John's strategy was to walk us up the hill upon which Totnes rests, then work our way back down from pub to pub. He's a man after my own heart. The last stop was The Albert Inn, home of Bridgetown Brewery. The train took us back to Plymouth for a final stop at the Britannia, and multiple ciders.
