Instead, the organization increasingly is a PR platform for the Wickensian cult of personality. That's too bad, but so very American in nature that there's little to do about it except laugh over a Progressive Pint ... until they get bored with sex and come for us, because in the end, one of the two oldest professions is fermentation.

Tune in tonight to WHAS 11 at 11PM as ROCK President Bryan Wickens is interviewed about the growth problem of prostitution in Louisville advertised through Craigslist.

My downtown New Albany house is four blocks from an active brothel. I do not like that fact and I wish it were gone. However, I do not think the "spa" is the single greatest preventable detriment to my neighborhood. Minimal code enforcement and minimal investment in public amenities/services impacts my quality of life much, much more.
ReplyDeleteMore than one way to a happy ending...
ReplyDeleteFaulkner was born in New Albany, MS.
ReplyDeleteDid Torquemada invent Spanish Rice?
With all the hungry and homeless in our area, you would think they might devote more of their time and resources in that direction, rather than worrying about what goes on behind closed doors in the local jack shacks.
ReplyDeleteThe lord works in mysterious ways, indeed.

Just have to inquire, how much time have you guys spent helping the homeless lately? Battling child obesity? Stopping drunk driving? Being positive?
If you have, hats off to you. While I don't agree with all the messages ROCK touts, it's easy to pick at a religious group. What I've found is most of the people doing the picking don't do much that doesn't involve fattening their own pockets.
On prostitution. I'm pretty much against most laws that try to govern the actions of two consenting adults. Which is why I'm pretty much against abortion, for code enforcement, against stiff penalties for most drug use.
Porn is pretty much legalized prostitution. Heck, we all know of people that seemed to get married for money. I.E., sugar daddies. It's all relative. If you take the criminal element out, in most cases your remove the carnal dangers. There will always be criminals, if they're not selling weed or pimping women, they'll move onto the next easy way to make a buck.
Daniel,
ReplyDeleteIt's not a double standard. I think the difference is, ROCK is going after consenting adults based on their religous beliefs and attempting to use government to enforce those beliefs on others. Yet, I would bet most of them are raise holy heck about the practices in some Muslim countries.
If they want to preach, I have no problem with them. Step over that line, I have a problem. Lie, like Mr. W when he addressed the city council, I have even a bigger problem.
Hoosier Daddy
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with people disagreeing with the way a group approaches something, and none of us want to live under Taliban rule. I just think before we say a group should be doing all of these other things instead of preaching, we should ask ourselves what are we doing that's so great?
On the council thing I can see your point. But prostitution is illegal, so asking the police to do their job and enforce laws is plausible.
Like I said, I don't have a problem with it but the criminal element is forcing minors into prostitution. Happens here in our country, happens all over the world. I'll never say a group is wrong for wanting to end that aspect of it and yes, to me a kid is much more important than code enforcement, our economy or any other money-based problem. They are definitely problems, but should come secondary to the welfare of people.
"..I'm pretty much against most laws that try to govern the actions of two consenting adults. Which is why I'm pretty much against abortion,.."
ReplyDeleteBut if two consenting adults, with their doctor decide an abortion is appropriate, it's OK...?
"..and none of us want to live under Taliban rule."
Oh really? I thought that was the point of the "pro-life" movement? Use the state to control womens bodies...
Personally, having lived next door to prostitutes on Main Street I can say it's a bummer, but so is the ghetto culture in general. The poverty in New Albany is a petri dish for criminal behavior.
Why break a sweat over some church "do-gooders" and their anti-pornography campaign? If basic code enforcement started to happen, over time the economic interests, slumlords, prostitutes, drug-dealers, strip-mall developers, tire-shredders, etc. would have no financial incentive to set-up shop in New Albany.
Again, I have to say, gov't is supposed to be in charge of public safety and it's not doing the job so ROCK steps in.
That's what I love about the "bible belt". Perpetually hung-up on sex.
Daniel,
ReplyDeleteMost of those same people would say(about gun laws), "Enforce the laws against the criminals. It's the person not the gun." Basically, I agree with them.
They are not just preaching and I believe that it what most of us that object to them believe.
Damn poor wording--even for me.
ReplyDelete"But if two consenting adults, with their doctor decide an abortion is appropriate, it's OK...?"
ReplyDeleteNot until the child gets a say...
"Oh really? I thought that was the point of the "pro-life" movement? Use the state to control womens bodies.."
We'll never agree on this. To me it stops being just a woman's body once they know they have a kid living inside of them. Plus it gives deadbeat dads fodder. "Well she said it was her body and her choice so why should I have to pay child support"
"If basic code enforcement started to happen, over time the economic interests, slumlords, prostitutes, drug-dealers, strip-mall developers, tire-shredders, etc. would have no financial incentive to set-up shop in New Albany."
So telling women to have the child they conceived is a no-no. But telling someone who owns property what to do with their private land is OK? Hmmm...
Like I said, we'll never agree on this and I don't want to hijack the post on abortion. I'm neither pro-life or pro-choice. I don't agree with abortion in 95 percent of the cases. At the same time, most pro-life people don't support social programs like welfare, food stamps and other resources to help struggling mothers raise their children. I don't believe that you can say you must have this kid and then do nothing to help that person. It takes a community to raise a child.
Hoosier,
I never said I agreed with ROCK. But I do believe in "You who is without sin cast the first stone".
That's all for me today. Cheers and Mark, don't forget to set your DVR for UK vs. UT tomorrow night. You don't get to see greatness in action like that every night.
If ROCK would put up "warning signs" in front of their own churches, I'd probably be a little more impressed. Or did they miss all the "news"?
ReplyDelete"So telling women to have the child they conceived is a no-no. But telling someone who owns property what to do with their private land is OK? Hmmm..."
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll bite...apples and oranges, Daniel. Slumlords effect everyone around them, a poorly kept home next to me effects my property values and is a constant, visible sight. An abortion is a private choice that no one ever has to know about. If the same slumlord neighbor has an abortion, I won't know about it and it doesn't effect me or my property.
Affect, effect..I always mess those up. If only I had one of those new-fangled dictionaries I've been reading about...
