New Albany is a state of mind … but whose? Since 2004, we’ve been observing the contemporary scene in this slowly awakening old river town. If it’s true that a pre-digital stopped clock is right twice a day, when will New Albany learn to tell time?

Old and new at River City Winery and Bank Street Brewhouse.
Seeing the breathtaking renovation of the River City Winery on Tuesday had the curious effect of enhancing my confidence that the modernistic approach we've taken at the Bank Street Brewhouse was the proper way to go. A winery and a brewery, two radically different design ideas, and a city block separating the two.
Q: That's progress, don't you think?
A: Yes, unless you're a conjoined councilman.
Taking extreme caution not to be too self-promotional, here are three recent postings at my beer blog that show our recent progress toward the exterior build-out. With the walk-in and grain room almost finished, and pieces of the brewhouse beginning to arrive, the current aim is to finish the outdoor seating area on the north side of the building as soon as humanly possible. As always, thanks go to Mose Putney and the saintly crew of Resch Construction.

Amazing.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Very impressive, though, leveling all of downtown in the process seems a bit much.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I follow you, TSOL. I think both BSB and RCW are making the best of what was there to use. The Baer buildingg survived the purges of earlier times. The three footprints comprising our building and the parking lots on both sides were created in 1950 and 1955, respectively.
ReplyDeleteI'd have been against tearing those three houses down. Then again, I hadn't been born yet.
Sorry, bad attempt at humor (the renderings, both angles, show nothing but the building and a horizon, creating an oasis effect :)
ReplyDeleteDuh, Roger. I even got that one!!
ReplyDeleteNo beer for you.
Glad to see the winery samples have been well enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteReally, nothing puts the spotlight on great old buildings like great NEW buildings. I really hope you pull off the coolest modern architecture my friend Mose can foist on you. That drawing would be an awesome compliment to the new Y, but also a grand statement of how great modern and Victorian styles can combine. Well done guys!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, Columbus, Indiana-ish
ReplyDeleteAgreed that it is very impressive. Definitely something to get excited about.
ReplyDeleteI see that my office building has been omitted from the rendering. Given the garish new "Koehler Law Office" sign that now adorns the building's side wall, that may be a good thing.

ReplyDeleteHave I advocated rental property inspections lately?
Ahhh... But that sign is the fruit of many fractured ordinances, and the whip being placed to the backs of tenants of substandard housing....
