Paul Wheatley appears on C-J radar

Monday morning’s Courier-Journal takes note of Paul Wheatley, New Albany’s new economic development director:

“New Albany Mayor James Garner no longer needs to start his days by worrying about finding new jobs for his community. He's now got Paul Wheatley, the city's new economic development director, to do the fretting -- and the planning he hopes soon will eliminate the need for worry.”

  1. Lesson No. 1, grasshoppa!

Paul was expertly ambushed by a reporter with a story in the can. Would that he learn, and learn quickly, that all you say can be used against you and your employers.

A good editor would not have permitted it to see print, rightly judging it to be an irrelevancy. But if Mr. Wheatley takes a lesson from it, some good may come of it.

  2. Is it ethically questionable if the writer interviewing Wheatley had been a candidate for the economic development position?

  3. Let's play "Did You Know?"

Excellent point, although I'm not certain that in a world where the Fox News Channel and Hardball pass for journalism, a cub reporter would be expected to know the ethical guidelines at play here. That's why it is important for an editor to edit.
