New Albany is a state of mind … but whose? Since 2004, we’ve been observing the contemporary scene in this slowly awakening old river town. If it’s true that a pre-digital stopped clock is right twice a day, when will New Albany learn to tell time?

But no one walks, anyway, so just drop 'em over there.
Look at that -- something up ahead is blocking the sidewalk. Hmm. It isn't the VFW, and we haven't had any snow to be bulldozed into the path of walkers; I wonder what it is?
I see.
It's last autumn's leaves, belatedly bagged and lazily dumped right on top of where people are supposed to be able to walk. You know, a wheelchair couldn't get through that mess, and it's been this way for a couple of days. So, seeing as the Board of Works doesn't give a damn, maybe ...
... I'll just take 25 seconds of my own time, do the work of the Arts Council's poltroon of a handyman AND the somnolent Board of Works, and move the bags of leaves off to the side so people can pass through, you know, the way they're supposed to be able to do.
But wait -- maybe this one of those areas in town where we unofficially refuse to officially enforce ordinances. Silly me.
By the way, are we cleaner and fundamentally better yet?
