Person of the Year (formerly Man of the Year) is an annual issue of the United States newsmagazine Time that features and profiles a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine that "for better or for worse ... has done the most to influence the events of the year."
So, who/what would be the winner if the consideration were to be restricted to New Albany in 2011? Here is an admittedly incomplete starter list, followed by the presumptive winner:
Jeff Gahan … for winning big in his mayoral bid
Doug England … for making change possible by rallying so many people against institutional top-down nepotism
DNA’s/Dudgeon’s “Come to City” slogan … for rallying so many people against institutional top down nepotism
The River View Project … for rallying so many – well, you know the drill by now
Steve Resch … for doing redevelopment right
Professor Erika … for spending so much time in Italy that she managed to lose to Cappuccino
But surely the biggest influence on events in New Albany’s year 2011, for better or worse, was the Sherman Minton Bridge’s sudden health problems on September 9.
What do you think?
From your list? Gahan. Hands down. Not sure your list constitutes the potential nominees, though, and based on perceived impacts (the perceptions of New Albanians), the mayor probably would not top most people's lists.
ReplyDeleteand who do you suggest Randy, Jack Messer? LOL
ReplyDeleteEd Clere. Keeping top-down its top-downiest from here to Lake Michigan.
ReplyDeleteI nominate Steve price, ok pack dogs go ahead pile on
ReplyDeleteI'm willing to give Price a lifetime achievement award in the "addition by subtraction" category.
ReplyDeleteand I'm willing to give Doug England the same award for fuzzy math
ReplyDeleteI don't usually engage with flaming bomb throwers, but my point is no politician occupies the forebrains of most New Albanians. How about Andy Terrell for person of the year?
ReplyDeletehow about whoever is willing to bring a Barnes and Noble to New Albany
ReplyDeleteIf we're going with cypherin' and perception, I'll say Coach Whatshisname.
ReplyDeletehow about carl malysz, after all he is the rasputin of the court
ReplyDeleteWhat about the senior editor of this blog?
ReplyDeleteSome people claim that no one reads this blog but it sure is funny how often it gets referenced from so many different sources. This blog probably does more to get citywide "discussion" going than anything else in town. Agree with him or not, many of the topics here are constantly the hot ones around town.
Yeah, he's my friend and that probably colors my thinking a bit. Still, I've disagreed with him(and Jeff)several times. He listens. Sometimes he changes his stance. Sometimes slightly, sometimes a lot and sometimes not at all. Through it all, he remains a friend and then listens to the next issue. Not many politicos, civic leaders, and wanna be's can say the same thing. With so many, it's either all or nothing. Who else puts their name out there time after time on the issues? Really, who?
