So I'm leafing through the just-out February edition of Floyd County Current and I encounter a Valentine's ad on page 26. Across the top of the page it says "The City of New Albany, Douglas B. England, Mayor". A heart-shaped photo collage and a local business plug later appear the words "Making it Happen".
Now where have I seen that before...
Is that a City sponsored ad on page 26? Just wondering... and suggesting that anyone who needs an "s" or an "h" for their stick-on letter collection should probably go buy them soon in order to avoid the rush.
Slightly related...
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering who is paying for all these full page ads featuring Sheriff Mills. They read like campaign ads but there is no "paid for by...".
I'm just wondering what Stumler has to say about the impending bankruptcy bill in the Indiana State House.
ReplyDeleteIs Stumler in need of a pension? Will he drop out if Gov Daniels can take over and void his retirement?
Gina,
ReplyDeleteFrom what little I know about him, I doubt a pension is needed. My first take on his candidacy is that he thinks it would be cool to end his "career" as a mayor. Yes, as "a" mayor. Just so happens that he lives in New Albany.
This "which party to run on" debacle makes one thing pretty clear. The Democrats convinced him that they could deliver more lemmings than the Republicans.
Thanks Mark, my next question I guess is what would any Mayoral candidates response be to this quote:
ReplyDelete“We have a new privileged class in America,” Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels told Politico. “We used to think of government workers as underpaid public servants. Now they are better paid than the people who pay their salaries.”
I posit the new Mayor might be crushed between the Daniels bankruptcy machine on one side and a chronically weak tax base on the other. I don't think that will be a party. Or a party thing necessarily.
Daniels also told the WSJ that local governments in Indiana set their budgets at any level they wish and then just raise the tax rate to match it.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who plans to run for mayor, council, commissioner, etc., should take the governor on, toe to toe, on that lie and make him answer for it. It, along with a near total lack of respect for public institutions, is the basis for much of his "reform" and is nowhere near true.
Clere and company don't have the guts, but pulling that rug out from under is the first step toward real debate.
"Daniels also told the WSJ that local..."
ReplyDeleteNo shit? I have to hunt for that.
yes, yes, the battle lines are being drawn. Where do our local officials stand? Are we bankruptcy candidates? Do we pass the Daniels "smell test'?
ReplyDeleteCriteria for "distressed" designation (one of eight needed):

• 3) Failed to pay judgment creditors more than 30 days after judgment
• 4) More than 30 days late any of the following: sending taxes withheld from employees, sending employer or employee contributions to Social Security or Medicare, depositing minimum obligation payment to a pension fund
• 5) Accumulated a deficit in total government funds of more than 5 percent of current year revenues
• 6) Seeks renegotiation of payments owed that are more than 30 percent of annual revenues and more than 90 days overdue
