Matt Nash, now forever linked to the pergessive conspiracy to tarnish ... to do the mayor's ... hands off our monies ... whatever. Coach K's bound to be ecstatic. Assuming the three enraged Pricelidytes posting on the website are different people -- never a safe bet when it comes to the hooded wannabeens -- two of them want to cancel their subscriptions, and one thinks I'm feeding Matt "swill" to corrupt him. It's a wonder the newspaper still has subscribers.
What a wonderful Friday morning floor show here in the Open Air Museum!
NASH: The Price is wrong
As far back as I can remember Steve Price has always voted “no.” Even when the rest of his colleagues agree on the subject at hand, Mr. Price always finds a reason to object. Usually it involves the spending of the taxpayers money and he believes that he is being a good steward of the peoples’ money by just voting “no” all of the time.
Matt must be hiding the free "swill" from me.
ReplyDeletePrice sounds like a broken record and constantly contradicts himself. It shows a lack of research and understanding.
I believe there is one exception to that rule. Steve has voted aye on at least a few animal shelter issues. As a supporter of the shelter, and an animal lover, I appreciate that.
ReplyDeleteEven the Chinese love my column! I could be like Jerry Lewis is in France or David Hasselhoff in Germany
ReplyDeleteRuthanne: Yes, a stopped clock is right twice a day.
ReplyDeleteMatt: For once, I'll leave the Chinese spam up so that it doesn't ruin your joke.
Apparently, the Taiwanese company thinks Matt deserves the company of a certain set of young ladies for his troubles. It's more than a bit unenlightened and fascinating to consider if the suggestion is reward for diligence or succor for hardship, but I think he may have inadvertently discovered some notion of a Price-like chicken in every pot.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Steve come election time, I'd just put together a slide show of site highlights instead of singing that embarrassing "all of me" song again. If there's any way to better symbolize his hopes for the city than taking advantage of half-nude Asian women in economic and cultural distress, I'm not sure what it is.
Speaking of Asian women in economic and cultural distress, and council members, can anyone, including Mr. Zurschmiede, verify if it is his business leasing to the spa at the corner of Main and Pearl? I have heard this anonymously stated, but would like to know if it is true or simply a vicious rumor.
ReplyDeleteAnn,
ReplyDeleteI was considering some in-depth investigative reporting to finally get to the bottom of that situation (The local TV stations' sweeps reporting gave me the idea)
I think if the 3rd district would come up with one good candidate to counter price in the primary, instead of 3 or 4 good candidates running against price, he time on the council would come to an end.
ReplyDeleteThe votes against Mr. Price are split between too many candidates and generally, if I am not mistaken, are in greater numbers than the vote for Mr. Price, but I could be wrong about the totals...
This article sucks and is one of the reasons people don't work together here in New Albany.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the Matt Nash plan?
There is a small community of people involved in this city, articles like this just pits people against each other.
If you what to make a positive difference Carl confirmed a time to talk about starting a Mayoral forum in New Albany. The meeting will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the city county building.
I would hope other people see the importance of such a forum and will support this issue.
If you can't make it post a comment on here and I'll rely the message to the Mayor.
...and I thought this day couldn't get worse. First, Ronnie James Dio dies and now this.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't know what my plan for New Albany is you haven't been reading my columns.
I am not the one being paid to lead this city. Steve Price gets a check each month to sit on the city council and fight against any type of progress.
You can start a "forum" but if your councilman sits there week after week voting against things like YMCA, street paving, sidewalks, police protection, finally fixing the sewers, The only explanation is "we can't afford it" I say, WE CAN'T AFFORD NOT TO!!!
New Albany will not move forward until we get people like Steve Price off of "OUR" city council. I can't run against him and I can't vote against him, but maybe if I raise the awareness of the people that live in his district, next time the results will be different.
Anyway thanks for reading this column. Back issues can be found at the Tribune office 303 Scribner Dr. or at the New Albany Floyd County Public Library.
You can also search the Tribune site by using "matt nash" and they'll start popping up.
ReplyDeleteHere's the first one for you, RemCha, just in case I'm not able to attend.
Is there a single person in elected office in Floyd County who understands the concept of adaptive reuse? I speak specifically of the Coyle building and the annex on Grant Line Road.
I've got an issue that the "other side" has championed. How about meetings that are scheduled when working people can attend? Just trying to help bridge the gap.
ReplyDeleteI have read all of Matt's Columns just like I read all of Roger's columns.
ReplyDeleteAnd there is no plan.
You both have suggested ideas, so have I and so has other people but a plan explains how to achieve those ideas.
Steve Price is one person out of nine. One person makes very little difference when you need five votes on a fiscally conservative council. The way I see Steve is he is the sub-conscience of the council always reminding it that it needs to be fiscally responsible.
As a fiscal conservative who also sees the importance of progressive government I see both sides of the debate as correct but only needing to find a balance.
Mark you are correct. I didn't set the time. I told them I would be willing to meet whenever they needed me to.
ReplyDeleteI was asking them, I wasn't going to make an issue out of the time.
But I will ask Tuesday that the Mayoral forum be held in the evening where a majority of people can attend.
Roger I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the city doing to find a tenet for the Coyle Property.
Is the plan commision doing anything to attract a business to that site.
If city hall move there we lose the taxes it now provides.
The cities needs to be doing everything it can to attract a private business.
Steve is always campaigning for accountability and most of his critics accuse him of creating a straw-man. Matt’s article brings up the point about Price voting against the police but it neglects to inform readers of the full story.
ReplyDeleteOriginally the appropriation was for 10 officers that were supposed to be hired for the use of crime prevention. The police made the case several times about how they needed more officers to create a task force that would do all the things the current police force couldn’t do because they were busy with traffic patrol. The appropriation was going to fail on the last reading when Jack asked to amend it for only five officers, which did happen under the objections of Mr. Price because he said that he was told that the police needed 10 not 5 and “now the plan will work with 5”. Detective Haub said 5 is better then nothing. The appropriation passed with Price never changing his vote.
The story doesn’t end there. The 500,000 was supposed to go towards hiring 5 officers for crime prevention. I spoke against hiring the officers because there was not a plan addressing what the city would do on its behalf to achieve what Detective Haub was saying. Instead of the money going to hire the officers it went to the Police Department’s general budget.
It doesn’t end there either. Not long after that another appropriation was on the agenda asking for 2 million for both police and now fire. Where another 500,000 of that was to go towards hiring 5 additional officers.
After asking a few council member’s, Detective Haub, and the Police Chief about what was going on that is when I learned of what transpired, but the story gets better. The five additional officers will not be going to crime prevention but traffic patrol. New Albany doesn’t need more officers for traffic patrol we need more officers for crime prevention and yes traffic patrol can be used as crime prevention but it’s not the example Detective Haub was making. I feel that we could benefit if some of the existing force was taken off of traffic patrol and used for crime prevention.
That is most of the full story and when you add Councilman Price’s campaign of accountability the full story gives merit to his objections.
I was talking to Kevin Z to sponsor another appropriation for more officers but I can’t do that if the officers will be going towards traffic patrol and how can I trust city officials who don’t do what they say they are going to do? How is the council supposed to approve funds if they can’t trust city officials and how is Steve supposed to vote yes when he wants accountability first?
Roger here is an idea for the Coyle Property.
ReplyDeleteA "Responsible" for profit College
Benefits:
Taxes
Jobs
Students for downtown businesses
Maybe a few professors as homebuyers for the area
And Randy could start to sale tax books
You asked for it:
ReplyDeleteMy Plan
1. Eat Breakfast
2. Write a column
3. Sway public opinion
4. Get rid of council that drags their feet on progress
5. World Domination
And when offered some "accountability", he votes against it.
ReplyDeleteI"ve always thought the whole "Steve Price No thing" was a huge straw man here. I assume Mr Price does represent a significant population of residents and even if Mr Price is removed from his council post, the population he represents (think ghetto) will still be here. So my question for Matt and co. is - how does removing Steve Price's obstructionist vote at city hall change the reality in the neighborhoods? If we vote in someone else, will that insure code enforcement, adaptive reuse, green transportation...? I just worry it's too easy to attack Price instead of the real big problems like endemic poverty and low educational standards here.
ReplyDeleteghet·to /ˈgɛtoʊ/ Show Spelled[get-oh] Show IPA
ReplyDelete–noun,plural-tos, -toes.
1.a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.
2.(formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.
3.a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.
4.any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.
Must this word be used to describe everything regarding this city?

ReplyDeleteGina, the best reason to remove Price is so that perhaps for the first time since I've lived in the 3rd district, we have a council person capable of understanding a semblance of contemporary reality. His constituency still will exist, yes, but then perhaps it would not be holding an entire transitional district hostage through the intellectual vacancy of its spokesperson.
ReplyDeleteRemCha, declaring Price as the council's fiscal conscience strikes me as misplaced. Shouldn't you be criticizing his lack of a plan just as much as Matt's?
Personally, I think when Mr Goldberg entered the 3rd district race back in the last election primary, against Mr Hershfield who was already receiving strong support from the progressive residents, the Price win was assured. So can we blame Mr Goldberg too for holding an entire district hostage?
ReplyDeleteThe irony in all this has always been that Price regularly advocates for policies that would maintain if not increase poverty levels and refuses to be accountable for the disinformation campaigns he wages while doing so.
ReplyDeleteWhile not a solution in totality (and I don't believe anyone has ever claimed it would be), removing him from office could increase both the possibility of individual achievement and transparency in public affairs. The idea that he's acting as anybody's conscience is laughable, as his approach is often fundamentally dishonest.
I wonder how many people in need are not taking advantage of the subsidized child care the YMCA offers, for instance, precisely because Price spent so long telling them it shouldn't be made available because they'd never be able to afford the outrageous prices, even after being informed multiple times about their sliding scale. That alone could make a significant difference in a family's financial life and their children's futures.
If I were a hard-hearted conservative trying to prove that poverty is purely the result of personal laziness, Price would be on a poster.
Just as an FYI, Mr. Goldberg was in the 3rd district race long before Mr. Harshfield.
Favoring Price's removal does not imply that I disfavor planting trees, seeking economic solutions or arresting meth lab operators. There is often an implicit assumption of mutual exclusiveness. This is not the case.
ReplyDeleteWhile I understand the emphasis on this blog about Mr. Price(since he is the district councilman for so many here), I think there are far more "dangerous" members than him. Dangerous in the sense of a being a severe detriment to a better future for New Albany.
ReplyDeletePrice is one issue. I don't think he is capable of cobbling together a bloc of members--he can join but not create. So, in essence, he really is just a lone vote. Not true with Mr. Coffey and Mr. Gahan. To me, they are the real obstruction.
Roger you are right. I am not forwardly critical of Mr. Price when I disagree with him as I am here.
ReplyDeleteIf he was writing articles like Matt's and at time yours I would be.
I didn't say that Mr. Price was the conscience but sub conscience or subconscious.
