At another blog, in defense of 3rd district councilman Steve Price, a veiled pundit wrote these words. I've omitted the parts that hector me for incessant drinking, which is something I'm far better at doing myself, rather than to rely on anonymous, cannabic nannies to do it for me.
You need to respect other classes of people who may not have the education you have, the money you have, etc. Some people do with what they have and if they are a laid back person playing music, taking care of his business, talking with taxpayers in a lower caste than you, I say more power to him. There but for the Grace of God goes a lot of us.
And so, we return to the notion of Steve Price as fearless class warrior, heroically ensuring egalitarianism through shared deprivation. Is this really the case, or is it just another label for too broke to fix?
Is Price protecting the Little People, preventing their progress, or just too oblivious to know the difference?
As he has noted in the past, am I "arrogant" for asking him to pronounce a person's name correctly?
If you have a viewpoint, please let us know.
Just trying to keep up with all the anonymous posters keeps me from even attempting to read Shirley's blog anymore.

ReplyDeleteHe really thinks so. Yes. Yes.
Steve admits that getting an education was just not his thing. Does that make him a bad person? Not only no, but hell no. However, I do think it makes him a poor councilman for a city the size of New Albany.
Also, if we(if I may be so bold)don't recognize that some of our comments can come across as patronizing, then we are just as blind.
Accountability is central to any notion of leadership. Price's refusal to hold himself accountable to factually correct information and an operationally sound framework is patronizing to his constituents.
ReplyDeleteAs such, his incessant misrepresentations are the epitome of arrogance and his "not his thing" protestations are a cop out. They're failed attempts to be "cool" rather than substantive.
It has nothing to do with universities and everything to do with integrity.
Disingenuousness as a function of self-imposed ignorance is no better or worse in result than disingenuousness derived from other motivations. It certainly provides no basis for trust or pride in community, irrespective of one's perceived position within that community.
Until Price owns up to that, his educational and communicative responsibilities, he'll never be an honest and effective advocate of anything or anybody, regardless of his intent.
No matter the amount of money or knowledge with which any of us started, we're getting gypped.
I think Steve Price is a sincere person. I also believe you can be a "self-made" person and work toward self-education if the formal process is not possible. But just because he believes it and is sincere when he says some of the stuff he says does not make it right or true. I think Bluegill nailed it. I also say that repeating the same "we cannot afford it" "too much money", etc etc no matter what the circumstances is not a real belief but a fallback because self education has not been undertaken. It has been my observation that we can offer facts and proof on many topics and that obviously has nothing to do with it.
