Mark your calendars: Harvest Homecoming and Lupulin Land, this October.

Looking ahead to October, we see that Saturday, October 1 is the date for the Harvest Homecoming parade, followed by booth daze from Thursday through Sunday (October 6 through 9).

In the spirit of the homecoming celebration, but also as an alternative to the Bud Light mentality that tends to pervade the annual HH experience, we at Rich O's, Sportstime and the New Albanian Brewing Company decided to coordinate the opening of our annual harvest hop festival with the Harvest Homecoming booth weekend.

4th Lupulin Land Harvest Hop Fest at Rich O's begins Friday, October 7.

There's always a chance that by HH 2006, some of these beers will be available downtown as well.

  1. Ceece, bear in mind that (a) the state of Indiana regulates such matters, with a whole set of hoops to jump through, and (b) these hoops are easiest navigated by restricting access to beer to certain places, i.e., the beer garden, and turning the process over to a wholesaler, whose interest is selling its own beer for maximum profit.

It isn't about the best beer, but about the easiest way for the most people to earn a cut.

The way around this would be for a licensed tavern or restaurant downtown to do the paperwork and set up its own beer garden. This would be perfectly legal, although there might be a problem with city officials signing off, owing to their interest in maintaining the monopoly at the current "official" venues.

Also, it is unlikely that the current taverns downtown - the ones displaying the point of sale materials given to them by Nadorff, our Bud wholesaler, would be interested in doing anything different.

However, as the demographic changes, so should the options.

Rest assured that I'm always sniffing around for such opportunities.
